indieDwell Q2 Impact
From the Founders
We hope this finds you all safe, healthy and as happy as you can be given the current circumstances. Between COVID19, national social unrest and the economic crisis there is a tremendous amount of suffering in the country right now. At indieDwell we are standing steadfast in support of everyone who envisions a more loving, compassionate, caring and equal world. We are committed to doing our part at this moment and as such we have been working around the clock to provide housing for the unhoused in San Jose California. Housing for individuals recovering from addiction in Colorado. Housing for veterans in Washington state. And finally high quality jobs with full benefits and ownership in our company in Idaho, Colorado and in many other states soon.
We believe deeply in the notion of housing as healthcare and high quality work as a major contributor to emotional and financial well being. We exist to be a solution to some of the country's major social issues, but more so we exist to inspire others to follow our lead. To show that human and environmental capital is equal to financial capital. To show that companies can do the right thing and do well financially. We thank each and every one of you for the unwavering support and trust you have shown indieDwell over the past three years and we will continue to press forward to have as large an impact as possible.
Be safe and be healthy.
Pete and Scott
P.S. If we haven't heard from you in a while, we hope you are staying safe and healthy. Let us know how we can collaborate on growing healthy, durable, sustainable and affordable housing in the U.S. as we look toward emerging from this global health crisis.
Partners
The biggest news this quarter is that indieDwell opened its second U.S. factory, in Pueblo, Colorado on July 6! It is only because of our partners in the state that we could make this happen at all. So thank you to Gary Community Investments, Colorado Health Foundation, Colorado Trust, The City of Pueblo, CO., the Pueblo Economic Development Corporation, and the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) for having the vision to make this a reality.
We also want to highlight the work of our partners at the Decro Group, who since 1989 have developed over 1500 units of affordable housing in Southern California. As previously noted, we are working with Decro on several permanent supportive housing projects in the Los Angeles area, but they have also been instrumental in helping indieDwell establish future operations in Southern California.
People
indieDwell Holdings added Rob Wahl to its leadership team. Wahl has three decades in the finance industry in the U.S. and in London, chiefly as a Managing Partner at several capital management firms managing assets in excess of $1 billion. At indieDwell, he will work with the management team on scaling the business across the United States.
indieDwell Holdings also added supply chain expert Kelly Christenson to the team as Director of Procurement. Kelly brings 30 years of industry experience to indieDwell. She spent the last seven years with the J.R. Simplot Company, and the ten years previous to that with Proctor & Gamble.
Purpose
Caldwell factory operations to be carbon neutral by Q4 2020
In Q2 we completed a Greenhouse Gas Emissions Survey in partnership with researchers at Boise State University. The largest contributor to GHG emissions related to indieDwell's operation comes from gasoline, and moving people and product to and from the factory. Researchers and indieDwell Co-Founder Scott Flynn identified a number of strategies - employees working from home, programmable thermostats, LED lighting - that can help reduce emissions for a minimal investment. By utilizing carbon offsets, our Caldwell factory operations will achieve carbon neutrality by the end of the year. We are gathering data from the Pueblo factory and in Q3 of 2021 will produce a roadmap to make that factory carbon neutral as well.
Projects
For the City of San Jose, California, indieDwell is constructing 36 temporary-permanent/rapid rehousing units for our new partner Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley that will house 120 people. The project moves people experiencing homelessness from temporary shelters to more stable housing. We are scheduled to deliver the project in August.
*The original version of this story read indieDwell was constructing 108 units. The corrected version reads 36 units that will house 120 people.
Initial projects emerging from the Pueblo factory iInitial projects emerging from the Pueblo factory include a sober living facility for the Southeast Health Group and a project for NeighborWorks Southern Colorado. We area very proud to be partnering with these organizations that have long served the Southern Colorado community.
